Single serving coffee pods…

Oh hey everybody!

So, I’ve been noticing that these single serving coffee pods are becoming quite popular these days… WHY!?

Alright, I can see the convenience factor in being able to brew one cup of coffee instantly at the pull of a lever… but that’s the only plus I see.

In order to use the pods you will need to purchase a single pod brewer… they range in pricing, but the nicer ones can cost you about $300!

The cups/pods themselves can get pretty pricey as well. Sure there are deals out there on the internet where you can find coffee pods available for about $5 per package (still not cheap), but the more premium/gourmet pods can cost around $30 per set… yikes! And get this… I have heard arguments that the $5 sets and the $30 sets taste pretty much the same so you might as well just buy the cheaper set. WHAT! Does that make any sense to you?

If the so called gourmet coffee tastes the same as the $5 pod that’s a problem! It does however make sense because these pods, like any coffee bought in the grocery store, will be sitting around in stores and warehouses until they are sold. There is really no way of knowing how fresh the coffee is because you really have no idea when it was brewed. So, yeah I guess stale gourmet coffee is going to taste pretty much the same as a regular $5 pod of coffee.

What do you think? Is the gratification of an instant caffeine rush worth sacrificing taste and freshness? Or do you like these things and think I’m just full of hot air?

Fresh Coffee!

When I used to work at a Best Buy store, I would occasionally cover over in the home appliances section while the regular guy there was on his lunch break. I had plenty of time to peruse the neat little gadgets and geegaws for kitchen use. I noticed that they were selling a couple of these single-serve pod things next the the regular coffee makers. Of course they also had plenty of the little pod/cup flavored coffee servings alongside them. To me, it just looked like another way for marketers to be able to inflate the amount of money that they can sell a tiny bit of coffee grounds for. I’m with you on this one for sure, Colleen

The best coffee I’ve tasted in my 50+++ years was in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. The next best cup was made at a dinner party 6 months ago hosted by folks who owned a kitchen shop. The coffee for four people was made on a cup-by-cup basis. It was actually quicker than I imagined it could be, and the coffee was as good as the primitive coffee made by dropping beans in a cauldron of hot water in a remote Guatemalan village 35 years ago. It was EXCELLENT. Noticeably EXCELLENT. Since this was a relative, I asked what they estimated the cost of a cup of coffee to be. 48 cents was the answer. None of this is to say I’m investing in the equipment or the pods. But truly, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. They knew what they were doing.
