Irish Coffee

July 13th, 2009

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to Ireland and I must say that it was the trip of a lifetime! The people were friendly and the scenery was breathtaking… I would definitely like to go back some day.

But, enough about that let’s get to the topic at hand… Irish coffee! So, I knew, being that I work for a coffee company and that I contribute to the blog, that it would be a good idea to sample the coffee over there so that I could write about it.

The first day there I wasn’t brave enough to try the Irish coffee (I hadn’t drank enough yet and wasn’t ready to get hit with a shot of whiskey.). So, I went for the lesser evil of Coffee with Bailey’s. It was amazing! Rich and creamy… it went down pretty easy.

A few days into my trip I decided it was time for me to take the plunge and get myself a traditional Irish coffee! I took one sip and was instantly hit with the whiskey (mind you I am quite a light weight)! I took a few more sips and decided to ask the bartender for a mixing stick to mix the cream, hoping that would help to tone down the whiskey. Apparently you are not supposed to do that and he wouldn’t let me have it! So I manned up and drank the rest of it… I don’t know that I would ever have another.

On the plus side the presentation was really pretty. The coffee (both Bailey’s and Irish) are served in fancy glass mugs. And the coffee sits at the bottom with a wispy layer of cream at the top. Very nice to look at, almost too nice to drink!

I have a Friend who just FB’d about having his morning Bailey’s cup one Saturday, and lots of us thought that sounded good. Although, I thought that one part Bailey’s to one part half’n'half would be yummier (big ‘parts’, of course!). I love your posts–and am jealous of your job!

My father being an red headed Irishman use to drink his irish coffee every evening. I learned at a early age how to make his “special coffee”. I might be half Irish but like you after trying it I’ll pass.
