How & Where to Store Coffee

June 19th, 2009

Many of you have had questions about how and where you should store your coffee. Well, you are in luck because, with the help of Al and Marcie, I was able to put together some helpful tips!

Refrigerator

NEVER store coffee in the refrigerator! Roasted coffee is very porous, which means it tends to absorb molecules that may cause your coffee to smell like whatever you have going on in your refrigerator. So if you don’t want to play guess what’s left over, don’t keep your coffee in the there.

Freezer

?If you are not going to use your coffee in less than 1 to 2 weeks the freezer is a good way to go. But, only thaw coffee once, do not freeze, thaw and refreeze; this causes your coffee to deteriorate and waters it down. So keep what you use for the week on your counter in an airtight container (see Room temperature below), don’t keep opening and closing that bag!

Make sure you have your coffee thoroughly wrapped before you store it in the freezer! Keep your coffee, in its original packaging, inside a plastic zipper bag or plastic wrap. Make sure that the air has been completely drained from the bag! You may want to wrap it with plastic wrap a few times, just to be safe.

Room Temperature

Storing your coffee at room temp is the best bet when you brew it before two weeks after it’s delivered. When storing at room temp you want to eliminate all of these factors: oxygen, water, excessive heat, direct sunlight and other flavors.

The best way to store coffee at room temp is to keep it in an air-tight ceramic container that’s filled to the top. Other containers such as plastic allow flavor molecules to corrupt your beans… not cool!

Okay, let me break this down for you

  • Refrigerator-bad
  • Freezer-ok-wrap wrap wrap!
  • Room temperature-good-ceramic container

I hope this was helpful. If you have any additional questions ask away! Also if you try this let us know how it works out for ya!

So I guess this means that the coffee that’s been sitting on my counter for the last year and the stuff that’s been in the fridge even longer (not from CBD!) have gotta go…;-)

I never knew any of this. Thanks — I think…

My father received your wonderful Breakfast Blend for Fathers Day and was planning on storing it in a old coffee can. I told him I thought that was a bad idea because it might pick up the orginal coffee flavor that was in the can. I will show him your advise. Thanks.

This doesn’t have to do with storing coffee. I just wanted to say Happy Birthday CBD! I had my own coffee shop and sold beans for about 15 years. The coffee that I purchase from you meets my snobbish requirements. I thank you for offering a quality product at a decent price. You guys are great…keep up the good work and the supreme quality!
